[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING – Buxton – BN359 Incident number: 342 of 24/4/10]
At the weekend, a male purporting to be a police officer telephoned an elderly resident in Buxton, trying to make an appointment to visit her home to do a security check. Please be aware that police officers will only contact residents to carry out security checks if the resident has recently been a victim of crime or if the resident has contacted the police to request a home security check. Police officers have identification that can be checked out by calling 0345 123 33 33.
Different techniques are being used by certain security companies who are trying to sell security systems to residents.
Don’t let strangers into your home. If you have any concerns about cold callers please contact the police.
Trisha Mellor, B Division Community Information Officer, Corporate Communications, Buxton Police Station
From Derbyshire Police :
We have also been made aware of a scam doing the rounds from a company telephoning residents, purporting to be a company that insures SKY dishes. The caller says that the original company has gone bankrupt and that they are doing you a favour by making sure that you are still insured. They go on to ask for bank details. SKY has confirmed that this is a scam so please do not give out any bank details or personal information.
